How I Konmaried Away my Sadness

Was it boring? Yes. Did it kill a heck of a lot of time? Yes.

I have a tough time being at home for long periods of time, so the thought of self-isolating was not the most fun idea. I’m the type of person that would travel into town with absolutely no plans and do nothing, just to get out of my house.  This has nothing to do with my family, it was just my inability to be able to relax in my own space. Maybe that was due to the fact that it was so messy all the time, but I never said past Aoife was smart. So, when we were told that we had 2 weeks off college to self-isolate, my mum basically told me in no uncertain terms to clean my room, and properly (AKA not hiding everything in my already stuffed drawers). It’s also handy since I’m guaranteed to have the entire week off from work as I was meant to go on my holibops to New York for my 21st (oops that obviously can’t happen anymore). So after finally finishing work on Sunday, I got to work.

Bear in mind, there was stuff I’ve had in my room for around 6 years as that was when my room got repainted and remodelled. So I knew I was going to be in for a treat.

I procrastinate at the best of times, but for some reason, I was weirdly motivated to clean my room (wow she reads one chapter of a Mari Kondo book and this is what happens). So Monday (day 1 of isolation) I started blaring the tunes at 9 in the morning and cleaned and bopped until 5 pm that day. I filled 3 trash bags with trash and old broken school bags (as I said, I was a hoarder and literally didn’t’ even realise there was space behind my drawers for all that stuff to go??). I also installed a smart bulb from IKEA that I got last week and I don’t think I’ve been prouder of myself honestly as sad as that may be. If you want tunes to motivate you to clean, honestly Narcissist by No Rome ft The 1975 and Maniac by Conan Gray kept coming on during the day and I never failed to have a bop to them (wow music recommendations too, what doesn’t this article have??)

Day 2 of isolation, ah, St Patricks Day. How did I spend it? Pushing my bed away from the wall and spending 45 minutes brushing and vacuuming up the amount of dust behind there (I did google if I could die from inhaling so much dust, it was bad). I had to clear out the aul Dyson twice, just for the amount of dust under and behind my bed (also may have realised at that moment why I always have allergy-like symptoms all the time when I’m at home, well done Aoife). Today’s playlist was actually storytimes on YouTube, I’m not afraid to admit that I love hearing about random peoples drama and how someone got cheated on at Coachella last year or whatever (Sarah Baska videos kept automatically playing, and honestly I wasn’t mad,  her stories are pretty mad and quite entertaining when you really wish you weren’t cleaning your room for 6 hours) 1 more trash bag was full at this stage.

So day 3 of self-isolating at home and I have finally finished cleaning my room out. 3 bags of old clothes and half a bag of shoes that will eventually make their way to the local thrift shop full and finally. It was done.

And now for the terrible glamour shots

And now for the not so glamourous picture of all of the stuff, I took out (minus the electronic drum kit and keyboard):

I’ve separated everything to go for donations or recycling (don’t you worry, gotta make sustainable choices)

So yes, it did take 3 days to clean my room, but I can honestly say that I’m really happy I did it, I feel like I can actually do my college work in here since it isn’t super cluttered anymore. Highly recommend clearing out your room if you’re bored out of your mind and need something to do.

Also just don’t let your room get as messy as mine did because you really question your past life choices.
