DIT Library Opening Hours Cut

Due to staffing issues and delays in recruitment, all DIT libraries are at risk of sudden closure and some have reduced opening hours.

Library Opening Times Changes

  • Cathal Brugha and Grangegorman: Late night opening on 3 late nights instead of 4 nights per week. Not opening on Saturdays. There is hope that the saturday opening hours will be reinstated by November, but this will be delayed further if there are no changes to the current situation.
  • Rathmines: Late night opening 2 late nights instead of 3 per week.
  • Aungier Street, Kevin Street and Bolton Street: Usual opening hours. There may be unscheduled closures if there are unexpected staff absences (e.g. illness).

The full details of opening hours are available here.

What Went Going Wrong?

As we understand, there are major delays in staff recruitment across the whole of DIT, with some positions vacant for an entire year before they are filled. The same issue effected the health centre early this year, DITSU are monitoring the current situation as closely as possible.

DITSU Vice President for Education Rebecca Gorman has said

“The Union is appalled by this situation. The delays in staffing has been going on for years and now it has reached a point where essential services are suffering. Library staff should not be struggling to keep their doors open; they need staff to ensure they can provide the best possible service to their students”

We hope DIT finds a way to fill these vacancies for DIT library staff before the situation deteriorates even even further.
